Thies CLIMA Combined Classic Wind Sensor at Neumayer Station

Extreme conditions are part of everyday life at the German Neumayer Station III research station in Antarctica. Temperatures as low as −40 °C, ice, snow, and strong winds place high demands not only on the people on site but also on the technology. For the continuous collection of meteorological data, measurement systems are therefore required that operate reliably even under these conditions.

The story about meteorologist Gina Schulz and her work at Neumayer Station III clearly illustrates the conditions of the Antarctic winter. Thies CLIMA has been manufacturing the Classic Series anemometers for nearly 60 years, and they are among the world’s most trusted solutions for professional meteorological applications. Originally developed for national weather services, they are now also used in wind energy projects, at research stations, in the transportation sector, and in maritime applications. Special marine versions (e.g., 4.3324.32.x41) are available for maritime applications, and heated models ensure reliable operation even under Arctic conditions. The combined Classic wind sensor integrates the measurement of wind speed and wind direction into a single device. With a wind speed measurement range from 0.3 to 90 m/­s (4.3323.70.000), the device meets even the most extreme requirements. Due to its low distance constant, the device features a fast response even under rapidly changing wind conditions. With its robust design and proven mechanical measurement technology, the product series has been established in demanding meteorological applications for many decades.

Depending on the application, various output signals and interfaces are available—ranging from analog and frequency outputs to versions with serial interfaces for integration into a wide variety of measurement and data acquisition systems.
