Thies CLIMA Sensors for the German Weather Service

For many years, the German Weather Service (DWD) has relied on high-precision sensors from Thies CLIMA in its nationwide weather and climate monitoring network.

The measurement systems are used from coastal regions to high-altitude Alpine areas and provide reliable data for weather forecasts, severe weather warnings, and climate research. The product portfolio includes the laser precipitation monitor as well as the US 2D Compact and US 3D ultrasonic anemometers for precise wind measurement. While the US 2D measures horizontal wind direction and speed, the US 3D additionally measures vertical wind components, making it particularly suitable for complex meteorological applications. The Cold-CLIMA model, featuring a heated shaft tube, among other features, ensures stable operation even under extreme weather conditions.

Thies CLIMA’s sensor technology contributes to DWD measurement data and supports the continuous development of modern weather and climate models. Close collaboration also yields innovative solutions such as the Precipitation Analyzer, which differentiates precipitation types at high resolution, thereby opening up new possibilities for the analysis of extreme weather events.
